In my case I keep a tank of croaking gouramis (their bigger, fiercer competitors in the wild) next to the Betta sorority tank. You can release them into your new big tank the next day, make sure all the bettas go in at the same time.Ĥ) To maintain the sense of community, it's helpful to have dither fish of different species, or present a distant threat that makes them think it is more advantageous to keep together. In survival mode, Bettas can actually form loose community schools. The reason you do this is because when Bettas are forced together into small bodies of water during drought season, they all stop fighting and go into survival mode. They will be cramped and stressed, but this is the whole point and is temporary. Put all the females together in a very small holding tank overnight. They don't have to be from the same spawn, but they should band together very well if they grow up together before they hit adulthood.ģ) I don't recommend mixing in a bunch of unrelated adult females to form a sorority, but if you have no option to raise from fry, you should start with a heavily planted, high surface area tank the females have never lived in before (or rearrange it so they don't recognize it). I had best results with 10 and above, but 7 is the minimum I'd go.Ģ) If possible, raise the females from fry together in the same tank. Have a Betta imbellis sorority that's been going smoothly since pre pandemic.ġ) Contrary to what some people might think, the more females you have in a sorority, the less aggression there is.
